A fantastic antique campaign folding desk. Made in English in the middle of the 19th Century. It is of super quality with what appears to be Rosewood or similar quality wood. The brass fittings and hinges are of super quality too and clearly a country house piece.
Opens to reveal a leather desk arrangement with a space for a pocket watch, writing blotter and storage. The desk locks open with two catches at the bottom providing a stable writing surface. On opening a latch, a further compartment is revealed with silk lining and areas for storage of sewing items. Still present are needles and accessories dating from the 19th and early 20th century from Sharps, Cook Patent Linen and a silver piece hallmarked to Birrmingham, 1906. We believe there may be a connection to Cook and Sons who manufactured and distributed silk linen and cotton goods in the 19th Century. This a travelling desk and used by perhaps a travelling businessmen or upper class indiviudal.
With registration mark embossed to the leather: 490940. The calendar is dated 1927, but we believe the desk was originally made in circa 1860 and was in use up to the 1920's. This is a stunning and rare period piece. Perfect for any collector or to use and enjoy.
Condition
The interior has some losses to the leather, especially the corners of the blotter. Appears to have been a historical repair to the wood. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
Please look at photos closely as they form part of the item description.
