A fantastic antique children's book. Der Struwwelpeter ("shock-headed Peter") is an 1845 German children's book written and illustrated by Heinrich Hoffmann, and comprising ten illustrated, rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each cautionary tale clearly demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehaviour in an exaggerated way, "Harriet & the Matches" being one of the best-known. "Der Struwwelpeter" (Shock-Headed Peter) is the first story and provides the book's title. This is one of the earliest books for children combining visual and verbal narratives, and is considered a precursor to comic books. Some researchers now see the stories in the book as illustrations of modern child mental disorders. The work was adapted and presented on stage as "A Children's Farce with Songs in two acts" by Philip Carr & Nigel Playfair, with music by Walter Rubens. A fabulous period piece with a lovely timeworn patina. Thi is a well loved and used copy. Perfect as a gift for any collector or to read and enjoy.
Condition
Bumped corners and spine. Foxing to some pages. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
