A fantastic antique adjustable mahogany reading table or lectern by Carters Ltd of London. Famed for his various inventions under the Trade Marked banner 'Literary Machines', John Carter was a Victorian inventor / cabinet maker operating out of 6A Cavendish Street, Portland Place, London from the 1880's.
Carter produced all manner of reading tables, chairs, couches, beds and bath chairs, many specifically aimed at wounded soldiers. Winning 20 gold medals and awards, Carter was maker to The Queen (Victoria), Prince of Wales and Emperors of Russia and Germany having gained a reputation for quality
With ivorine label of Carters Ltd, Invalid and Surgical Furniture Manufacturers London. Also stamped Carters on the mechanism. With superb cast iron legs with lovely detail and a mahogany top.
The table adjusts from a side table to a lectern and would have been used as reading table. Dating from around the turn of the century. A flexible and usedul period table made by a renowned maker. Perfect to add soul and character to any modern interior.
Condition
Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
