A fantastic antique Wayang Kulit shadow puppet. Dating from the early 1900's. Possibly of the character Ravana. 
These puppets are from the Indonesian island of Java. They are used to tell story of the Ramayana. It is the story of Prince Rama as he tries to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. These types of puppet are carefully cut out of buffalo skin and then decorated with paint. Tiny holes are punched all over the puppet to create the outlines and textures of the character’s clothes. The puppets are used as part of a performance that happens at night and can last for many hours. Hundreds of puppets are controlled by the Dalang (puppeteer) who moves them in front of a lamp to create shadows on a screen. The story is accompanied by music, which helps to create an atmosphere and to emphasise dramatic parts of the story.
With exquisite hand painted detail and hand tied wood supports. Please note that one arm and wooden support is missing. The central pole is hand turned. The detail and workmanship is stunning. A wonderful period piece, perfect for display, adding character and soul to any modern space.
Condition
Part of arm and wooden support is missing. Wooden stand not included. Areas of wear and missing paint in places. Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
