A fantastic antique metal robe box. Made from Japanned metal with original brass lock. With makers mark of Meyer and Mortimer of 36 Conduit Street, London and an owners plaque for H. P Jane esq. We assume this was owned by a member of the legal profession and was probably used for legal robes. The lock is stamped VR.
Meyer & Mortimer has one of the oldest pedigrees among the Savile Row fraternity. The modern company traces its heritage back to the 1790s when Jonathan Meyer, a tailor from Austria, established a tailoring and military outfitting business at 36 Conduit Street, at the north end of Savile Row. Around the same time in Edinburgh, the Mortimer family was specialising in military outfitting, supplying officers with swords, ceremonial dirks and firearms.
This box with its owners plaque and travel labels is a fascinating and useful piece. Perfect for display or storage to add soul and character to any modern interior.
Condition
Shows signs of wear and tear as it is old and has been used, but only adds to its character. Great decorative item which would look fantastic in any home or business interior.
